Module 1: Understanding the Tool

Co-Creating with AI – Skill, Effort, and the New Literacy

What is AI? (and what it isn't)

Artificial Intelligence is not magic, consciousness, or a substitute for human will. It’s a set of models and algorithms that process information, recognize patterns, and perform tasks. While it can mimic aspects of human output, it doesn’t "think"—it predicts based on data. Using AI effectively means understanding its boundaries and biases as well as its potential.

How Large Language Models Work (Simplified)

Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT are trained on vast datasets to learn how humans use language. They don't understand meaning like we do—they work by calculating the most statistically probable next word based on previous input. Think of it as ultra-advanced autocomplete, but capable of holding structured, logical conversations and producing complex outputs.

What "Next Word Prediction" Really Means

This core mechanism powers LLMs. They predict one token at a time (which can be a word or piece of a word), continuously adjusting based on context. The model doesn’t have thoughts, feelings, or intent—it just follows mathematical patterns. The brilliance comes from how those patterns intersect with human creativity during collaboration.
